  • CPSU main campus library unit conducts literacy outreach at NOAC ES

Armed with instructional materials, the Central Philippines State University (CPSU) Main Campus Library Unit conducted a storytelling drive for Grades 1 and 2 pupils at NOAC Elementary School. The literacy extension activity was conducted for more than eighty (80) elementary students from two (2) sections of each grade level, on March 21, 2025.

Main Campus Librarian, Mr. Julius Fetiluna, Library Assistants, Ms. Catherine Taclobos and Marian Susaya, Library Staff, Mrs. Susan Parcon, and Alpha Phi Omega’s Ms. Christal May Saloria interacted with the pupils and read contemporary children’s literature to their young listeners.

Illustrated books titled “Ibaloy, the Good Igorot Boy,” “Vilma’s Vineyard Workers,” “Eggy Egg,” and “Nina and Nanny Naty” were used as the reading materials, selected to inculcate Filipino values—promoting inclusivity and women empowerment.

“We chose storytelling as our unit’s extension activity because this relates to the goal of the library and its works. As storytellers, we desire for the learners to internalize the stories and their underlying moral lessons–to contribute to the affective domain of their learning journey and provide them with intangible yet invaluable takeaways as the youthful hope of this nation,” said Mr. Fetiluna.

The initiative was made possible with the active support of NOAC Elementary School’s Principal II, Dr. Loreto Cari-an, Master Teacher I, Ma’am Chona Toroy, and teachers.

The storytelling session was followed by an interactive question-and-answer with the pupil listeners to check their comprehension and reinforce learning through verbal commendation and tangible rewards.

“You can see the pupils’ interest and they even verbally affirm their enthusiasm after I introduced the team and the activity to the learners. I appreciate this storytelling endeavor from the CPSU team because the pupils get motivated by new faces–new people who contribute to their learning experiences. Learners often struggle to focus because of shortened attention spans yet with the visiting team positively breaking classroom monotony, it really reignites learners’ motivation to listen and learn,” said Ma’am Toroy.

The activity ended with the giving of prizes and snacks facilitated by the CPSU Team, and the Alpha Phi Omega team led by Library Staff, Mr. Vincent Ignacio.
